James River Batteau Festival

An 8-day journey down the James River from Lynchburg to Maidens Landing using recreated late 18th & early 19th century cargo boats called James River Batteaux. The James River Batteau Festival is a program of the Virginia Canals & Navigations Society.

Come watch the launch of the replica batteaux as they begin their journey down the river, and enjoy activities and entertainment that highlight the history of the batteau and of the James River – including traditional music, educational activities, historic games, crafts & t-shirt painting for children, petting zoo, demonstrations, food trucks, and more.

This annual event is held in mid-late June.
